For how long and in what capacity have you known the applicant? Ms. X has been working as a translator for our institution (X) since 2011. We first met when she came to our center for the interview of an exhibition on representative of X one May day in 2011. Detecting her passion and interest for art and proficiency in English, we gladly invited her as our translator. In your opinion, is the applicant’s scholastic record, as you know it, an accurate index of his/her scholastic ability? Yes….. /No…..If your answer is “No”, please explain briefly, possibly with reference to the applicant’s performance in independent study or in research participation programme. I don’t think I am on fair ground to make judgment on this. But no matter what Ms. Wu achieves in her scholastic record for the translation courses, I do appreciate her translations, which are coherent and lyrical. Besides, from her articles for exhibitions, interviews with our artists and ways in doing things, I find Ms. Wu is used to thinking independently with clear logic. When she worked as the escort interpreter this summer for a U.S. photographer, she was constantly in the mood of discussing her own views on the research project of our resident artist, who also featured an art college professor. “She is far more than an interpreter”, as the artist remarked. Ms. Wu finally concluded her well-done job by an article for X, analyzing the photographer’s research objective, initial plan, process and findings. Based on this, I do believe that Ms. X is prepared with an “academic mind” that will allow her to stand out in future studies and researches. In the space below, please add any comment you think will be of assistance in assessing the applicant. A separate sheet may be appended if necessary. At the first place, Ms. X is a wonderful translator. Throughout the recent two years, she translates the press releases of the X exhibitions launched approximately each month and interprets the speeches at the opening ceremony. She joined us in several grand events out of town, including one in Guangzhou, where she worked as an interpreter and hostess-though she had never been a hostess before. We also appreciate her tremendous work in rendering our website from English to Chinese, translating artists’ profiles with their work descriptions and art project related texts. One of our artists would like to get the words on a stele in Xi’an translated. Despite the blurred scripts, the ancient Chinese that is hardly comprehensible to modern Chinese and abundant obscure religious terms, she finally made it through several sleepless nights. From her translations and articles written for X, we could tell that she has a good sense of art. Each time before she gets down to the real work, she would review the background information and discuss with the artists extensively to have a thorough understanding. Some of the artists applied Chinese brushwork or other Chinese elements in their work. Ms. X showed special interest in this and always gave her peculiar points of view based on her knowledge in Chinese calligraphy and culture. She even participated in several art projects by donating sparkling ideas and artistic objects to the artists. As a friend, Ms. Wu captures our hearts as a caring and loving person, always smiling and forever positive even facing obstacles. She became friends with several resident artists by taking them to the local museums and art communities voluntarily. On one occasion, she even gave away her spare cell phone to an artist as she feared the artist may come across emergencies during flight connections back to the U.S. with her own phone unusable. Judging from Ms X’s persistent love and acute sense for art, as well as her painstaking efforts for our center, I am reasonably on firm ground to say that she will devote equal strength to art history studies and will succeed in becoming an excellent student in your program.
