9A unit 4 Growing up

Teaching objectives:

A. Knowledge objectives:

1. Learn some new words: stands, leader, national, graduate, simply, succeed in, although, prove, remain etc.

2. Learn some important phrases: try out for…, because of…, change his mind, Player of the Year, bring him to the attention of…the Slam Dunk Contest, through hard work…etc

3. Know about Spud Webb’s life and the NBA.

B. Ability objectives:

1.Give a brief introduction about one’s life.

2.Use some reading skills while reading: skimming, scanning, predicting.

C. Emotion objectives:

Learn to achieve one’s dream without giving up.

II. Teaching key points:

Understand the contest of the reading.

III. Teaching difficult points:

1. Get the reading skills: skimming, scanning, predicting. 2. Talk about Spud’s life.

V. Teaching Aids:

Multi-media computer, blackboard.

VI. Teaching Procedures: Step1. Lead in

1. Have a free talk with the students.

2. Show a short video about Slam Dunk Contest.

Step2.Pre-reading

Show some pictures about Spud Webb. Mention some new words while looking at the pictures. Ask students to guess something about


Spud according to the title---The shortest player in the NBA.

Step3.While-reading 1. Fast reading.

(1)Ask students to skim the passage to get the general idea. Show students the reading tips while skimming.

(2)Scanning. Ask students to go through the reading quickly to get answers to three simple questions. Show them the reading tips of scanning.

2. Careful reading

(1) Ask students to read Para 2-3. Complete a table.

(2)Read Para 4. Fill in the blanks to complete the sentences. (3)Read Para5. Mark “True” or “False” and correct these wrong sentences.

(4)Ask students to read Para 6 aloud together. Raise a question: What did Spud prove?



Step 4. Post-reading

1. Listen to the tape. Students can imitate the pronunciation and tone.

2.Work in pairs. Complete the conversation with the information in the article (Part B3). Encourage students to ask more questions if they can.

3.Show a profile of Spud Webb. Ask students to work in groups of four to talk about Spud’s life.

4. Summary. Tell students to learn from Spud Webb---We can do almost anything if we never give up.
