China has a lot of traditional festivals, such as the Spring Festival, the Mid-autumn Festival. My best festival is the Tanabata Festival. It is also called Chinese Valentine’s Day. Tanabata is on the seventh July in traditional Chinese calendar. The Tanabata Festival is the most romantic festival in the traditional festivals in China. It’s also the most important day for girls in ancient time. In the evening of this day, women do activities by pin to pray to the God’s seventh daughter ZhiNv for being cleverer with their hands. This is called qiqiao. They also pray for a happy marriage. The origin of the Tanabata Festival is a beautiful love story. Niu Lang was a poor boy who lost his parents when he was very young and lived with his elder brother and sister-in-low. His sister-in-low was very evil and embezzled all his property. She gave Niu Lang old cattle only. Niu Lang treated the old cattle very well. The cattle were very moving and told Niu Lang the way to meet Zhi Nv. Niu Lang met zhinv and fell in love with zhinv. They got marriage and had two children soon. Soon after, the old cattle were dead and asked Niu Lang to peel off its leather. When Niu Lang was in trouble, he can drape the leather on his body and he would get help. Niu Lang was very sad but did the thing the old cattle asked. Zhinv was the God’s seventh daughter and was banned to people’s world. The God was very angry when he knew that zhinv married to a mortal. Zhinv’ mother wangmuniangniang came to take zhinv to the heaven. Niu Lang draped the leather and took their children to catch up with his wife. At the time he would reach zhinv, zhinv’s mother used her hairpin to make the galaxy turbulent. Niu Lang was unable to go across the river, so he could only gaze with deep feeling at zhinv through the galaxy. With time goes by, their true love touched the God and the God promised them one day to meet with each other. This is seventh July and all the magpies will come to the galaxy to build a bridge for them. The origin of this festival is very beautiful and as the Chinese Valentine’s Day, many young people show their love to their sweetheart.
