Report on the Impact of Social Media on the Mental Health of Teenagers

Introduction

The use of social media has increased tremendously in the last decade. Today, it is common for teenagers to spend several hours on social media platforms each day. While social media has many benefits, such as enhancing communication and promoting social connections, it has also been blamed for several negative effects, including addiction, depression, anxiety, and poor body image. The objective of this report is to investigate the impact of social media on the mental health of teenagers.

Methodology

The research was conducted over a period of two months, from June to July 2021. The study involved 200 teenagers aged between 13 and 18years from different regions in the United States. Data was collected using a survey questionnaire that was distributed through online platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The questionnaire comprised of both open-ended and close-ended questions that were aimed at collecting qualitative and quantitative data. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis.

Findings

The results showed that 90% of the teenagers used social media

platforms daily. Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok were the most popular platforms used, with 40%, 25%, and 20% of the

respondents, respectively. The study also indicated that 60% of the teenagers spent more than three hours per day on social media, with 20% spending more than six hours daily. Interestingly, 80% of the teenagers reported that they felt addicted to social media, with 50% admitting that they could not do without using social media platforms.

The relationship between social media and mental health was also evaluated. The findings showed that 60% of the respondents

reported feeling anxious after using social media. Additionally, 40% of the teenagers indicated that social media negatively impacted their self-esteem, with many reporting that they felt pressure to conform to societal beauty standards. The study also indicated that social media had contributed to the development of depression in 20% of the respondents. However, it was noted that social support from online communities on social media was also seen as a coping mechanism for teenagers experiencing mental health problems.

Recommendations

Based on the findings, it is undeniable that social media use can impact teenagers' mental health negatively. Therefore, it is

recommended that parents and guardians monitor their children's social media use, provide guidance on healthy social media use, and encourage regular breaks from social media. In addition, social media platforms should create tools to help users identify

unhealthy usage patterns and provide resources to help users cope
