众所周知，英语中something常用于肯定句中，anything常用于否定句中，nothing表否定。 You might think that “global warming” means nothing more than a rise in the world’s temperature.(2005 D篇) After all, Ed’s idea of exercise has always been nothing more effort-making than lifting a fork to his mouth.(2003完形填空) And I had an uneasy feeling he had something there.(2002完形填空) 本文拟就这些词的特别用法加以总结，相信会对大家有所裨益。 【一】something A:表示“不简单的事；可观的成绩；有些地位的人”。例如： She thinks she’s something since she won the beauty contest.( 有些地位的人) We must believe that each of us is able to do something well, and that, when we discover what this something is, we must work until we succeed.(不简单的事) B:用于一些动词短语中: (1) have something on 拿着某人的把柄。例如： Although Miss Brown is not a good worker, her boss does not fire her because she has something on him. ( 2) make something of小题大做；瞎猜测；凭……吵架 / 生气；看懂意思。例如： When girls see another girl with a boy, they often try to make something of it. Ann didn’t like what Mary said about her. She tried to make something of what Mary said. I apologize for the untidiness of my letter, but I hope you can make something of it. (3) make something of oneself / one’s life 取得成功, 有出息。例如： He’s a clever boy——I hope he’ll make something of himself. (4) see something of someone 有时见到某人。例如： I hope we’ll see something of you now that you live nearby. (5) something tells me 我想 / 感到；我有理由相信。例如： Something tells me my watch isn’t quite right. Something tells me she’s lying. (6) have / be something to do with和……有关 / 联系。例如： I think Guy Fawkes is / has something to do with a plan to blow up Parliament. C:其它固定短语 (1) or something ……之类的人（东西、情况等）。例如： Mr. Green is a shopkeeper or something. I hear he has broken an arm or something. In the morning my students always read English or something. (2) something for nothing 不冒风险（不下功夫）就有收获。例如： Some people will never learn that you can’t get something for nothing. (3) something like大约,约摸；有点像。例如： It cost something like ten pounds. The building looked something like a church. (4) something / anything like ( = in any way; similarly) 相似的；大致如此。例如： I see them once every two months, or something like that. I’ll whistle the tune for you; it goes something like this. He isn’t anything like my first boss. (5) something of ( = to some degree)有点……；可说是一个；在某种程度上是。例如： The soldier found himself something of a hero when he returned to his village. She found herself something of a celebrity. —It is said that Jack is very rich and is always changing his private cars. What is he? —Something of a manager. (6) something to / in （话里）有些道理。例如： There is something to / in what you say: I’ll take your advice. And I had an uneasy feeling he had something there.(深刻道理) 【二】anything 1. 用于成语中 1) be anything but (= definitely not) 表程度，意为“绝对不 / 根本不是 / 一点也不”。例如： I don’t mean he’s lazy—anything but! He was anything but a hero / polite. 他根本不是英雄 / 他一点也不礼貌。 The hotel was anything but satisfactory. Alone in a deserted house, he was so busy with his writing that he felt anything but lonely. 2) be (as) ... as anything （口语）……不得了。例如： It’s (as) easy as anything. 3) if anything 如果有什么不同的话。例如： If anything, my new job is harder than my old one. 4) like anything (= very much, successfully) 表程度（拼命地 / 非常地 / 像……似地）。例如： The thief ran like anything when he saw the policeman. They’re always slagging me off like anything.他们经常把我骂得狗血喷头。 5) or anything 或是其他别的事。例如： If Bernard wants to call me or anything, I’ll be here all day. 【三】 nothing 1． 用于一些动词短语中: 1) be nothing to a. 不引起……的兴趣，对……无所谓（相当于 mean nothing to）。例如： The news is / means nothing to him. 他对这消息不感兴趣 / 无所谓。 b. 无法和……相比。例如： My losses are nothing to yours. 2) come to nothing 失败，没有结果。例如： All his schemes came to nothing. 3) have nothing on不比……强。例如： Even though she is older, Jane has nothing on Peter in school. 4) have nothing to do with sb.和……没关系。例如： This has nothing to do with you. 5) make nothing of a. 不在意，觉得……没什么。例如： He makes / thinks nothing of walking 15 miles. b. 一点也不懂。例如： I could make nothing of what he said. 6) mean nothing to对……没有意义。 These technical words mean nothing to me. b. 不引起兴趣，对……无所谓（相当于be nothing to）。例如： He used to like Jane but she means / is nothing to him now. 7) go for nothing 白费。例如： All our work has gone for nothing. What the teacher said went for nothing because the pupils did not pay attention. 8) nothing doing 不行。例如： “Will you lend me 10 dollars?” “Nothing doing.” 9) nothing succeeds like success.一事成功什么都顺利。例如： The girls all like Bob because he is football captain. Nothing succeeds like success. 10) Nothing to do with 和……没关系。例如： That idea has / is nothing to do with me. 11) think nothing of 觉得……不怎么样；不在乎；觉得没什么。例如： He thought nothing of the poem. 12) Think nothing of it. 不用谢，没关系。例如： “You didn’t mind my using your typewriter?” “Of course not! Think nothing of it!” 13) to say nothing of 还不说，除了。例如： It is a well-paid job, to say nothing of the short hours. He had his wife and seven children with him in the car, to say nothing of two dogs, a cat and a parrot. 2． 其它固定短语 1) for nothing a. 免费，不花代价，没花钱。例如： They will repair the building for the old man for nothing.
