How did these players get that way? Was it through training and practice, or are great players “born, not made”? First, these players come from places that have had famous stars in the past --- players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only 6 countries have ever won the World Cup --- 3 from SA and 3 from NA or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Pele was the son of a soccer player. Most players began playing the game at the age of 3 or 4. Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood – a poor, crowded area where a boy’s dream is not to be a doctor, a lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beetles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a ball made of rags. And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall in the slums of Belfast. 三、英译中 Greece was the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. In 2004, the Olympic Games returned to their origin when Athens hosted the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad. Athens was elected at the 106th IOC session in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 5 September 1997, from a total of five finalist cities: Athens, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Rome and Stockholm. 60.000 volunteers from around the world were trained for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Athens. Without the volunteers, the Olympic Games as we know them today would not exist. The volunteers, who are of all ages, cultures and backgrounds, all share the same passion for sport and the Olympic ideal. Besides the athletes, these are the people who best personify Olympism.
