春分Vernal Equinox or Spring Equinox 今天是24节气中的第四个节气---春分。 It is Vernal Equinox or Spring Equinox，the fourth of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. 春分，古时又称为“日中”、“日夜分”、“仲春之月”，在每年的3月21日前后(20日～22日)。这时太阳到达黄经0°，阳光直射赤道。 Vernal Equinox usually arrives around March 21 every year. On this day, the sun reaches 0 degree of the celestial longitude and directly blazes down the equator. “春分”有两层意思。第一，这天昼夜等长，都只有12个小时。第二，它是春季的中间点。从春分以后，太阳继续向北半球移动，气温持续上升。在中国大部分区域，日均气温为0摄氏度以上。 “Vernal Equinox” indicates two meanings. Firstly, on this day, the night and day are approximately equally long with 12 hours each. Secondly, it’s the mid-point for the spring season. After this day, the sun continues to move to the north hemisphere and the temperature continues to rise. Daily average temperature in most areas in China reaches above 0 Celsius degree. 春分习俗Customs 1、竖蛋：Egg-standing games 根据民间传说，你可以在春分的时候把生鸡蛋竖起来。这是一个追溯至4000年前的古老风俗。人们认为，如果有人能将鸡蛋竖立起来，他将会在未来交好运。在这一天，地球的地轴与地球绕太阳公转的轨道平面处于相对平衡的状态，这使得鸡蛋更容易被立起来。 According to folklore, you can stand a raw egg on its end on the equinox. It is an old custom that dates back to 4,000 years ago.It is believed that if someone can make the egg stand, he will have good luck in the future. On this day the axis of the earth is relatively balanced against the orbital plane of the earth’s rotation around the sun, which makes it easier to erect an egg. 2、吃春菜：Eating spring vegetables/ Eating seasonal vegetables 在中国很多地方，春分吃春菜是一种风俗。“春菜”是指各地不同的季节性蔬菜。为了保持健康和带来好运，中国经典《黄帝内经》中有古训建议人们吃季节性食物。 Eating spring vegetables during the Spring Equinox is a commonly practiced custom in many regions of China. ’Spring vegetables’ refers to seasonal vegetables that differ from place to place. The ancient teachings in the Chinese classic, Huangdi Neijing, suggests that people eat seasonal foods to help preserve health and bring good luck. 3、春分祭日：Sacrifice to the Sun god 春分期间，北京当地人有祭祀“太阳神”的传统，被称为“中和节”。用小麦和糖制作的“太阳糕”，则是主要贡品。 During the Spring Equinox, an old traditional practiced by Beijing locals is offering sacrifices to the Sun god. This tradition is called "Zhonghe Festival". The "Sun Cake", a round cake made from wheat and sugar, serves as the main offering. 4、送春牛：Rewarding farm cattle 这一做法在长江以南的南方地区十分流行。随着春分的到来，耕种开始，农民和牛开始变得忙碌。为了表达感激，农民会用汤圆回报牛。同时，人们还会祭拜鸟类，以向它们为农耕带来信号表达谢意，同时要求它们今年后期不要食用谷粒。 This practice is popular in the southern area of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. As the Spring Equinox comes, farm work starts and both the farmers and the cattle start to become busy. Farmers will reward cattle with sticky rice balls to express their gratefulness. Meanwhile, people will also make sacrifice to birds, to thank them for bringing signals for farm work and to ask them not to eat grains later in the year. 5. 燕子北飞 swallows fly north 古人把春分十五天分为“三候”。古语有云，一候玄鸟至;二候雷乃发声;三候始电，这生动地披露了春分时期的气候特征。 The ancient Chinese people divided the fifteen days of the Spring Equinox into three "hou’s". As the old saying goes, swallows fly back to the North in the first hou; thunder cracks the sky in the second hou; lightning occurs frequently in the third hou, which vividly reveals the climate feature during the Spring Equinox.
