No more than 与not more than

 1. no more than 表示“仅仅”、“只有”(= only)，强调少；而 not more than 表示“不

多于”、“至多”(= at most)。如：

 He is no more than an ordinary English teacher. 他只不过是个普通的英文老师。  He has no more than three children. 他只有 3 个孩子。

 He has not more than three children. 他最多 3 个孩子(有或许还不到 3 个之意)。  2. 用于比较两件事物时，no more ... than （=not …any more than…）表示对两者都

否定，意为“同……一样不”(＝neither ... nor)；而 not more ... than 指两者虽都具有某种特征，但程度不同，意为“不如”、“不及”(= not so ... as)。如：  He is no more a writer than a painter.

 他不是画家，也不是作家(= He is neither a painter nor a writer)。  A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.

 马不是鱼，鲸也不是鱼(=Neither a horse nor a whale is a fish)。  She is not more clever than he is.

 她不如他聪明(= She is not so clever as he is)。 no less than, no less...than, not less than的区别

 1. no less than 有两个意思：  (1) 表示“多达”、“有……之多”(强调数量之多)。如：  We walked no less than three miles.  我们走了 3 英里之远。

 We won no less than ￡500 in a competition. 我们在一次比赛中就赢了 500 英镑。  (2) 表示“简直”、“与……没差别”。如：  It is no less than robbery to ask for so much.  要这么多，简直跟抢劫没两样。  2. no less ... than 意为“与……一样”、“不比……差”(强调两者具有同等性)。如：  He is no less wise than you.

 他跟你一样聪明(他并不比你笨)。

 A dolphin is no less a clever animal than a dog is. 海豚与狗同样都是聪明的动物。  比较：A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. 马不是鱼，鲸也不是鱼(即鲸不是鱼就

如同马不是鱼一样)。

 not less than 意为“不下于”、“至少”。比较：  He has no less than seven daughters.  他有七个女儿之多。

 He has not less than seven daughters.  他至少有七个女儿。 Not so much… as

常用并列连词，相当于 rather than：与其说是 …倒不如说是…; 可以连接词与词，短语与短语，句子与句子

 例如：He isn’t so much ill as depressed.  =He’s depressed rather than ill.  他不是生病，而是情绪低落

 Oceans don’t so much divide the world as unite it.  =Oceans unite the world rather than divide it.

 与其说海洋分隔了世界，倒不如说海洋联结了世界各国。

 You feel lost, sick at heart before such unmasked hatred, not so much because it

threatens you as because it shows humans in such an inhuman light.

 面对这毫不掩饰的仇恨，你感到不知所措，惶恐不安，这倒不是因为它威胁了你，

而是因为它显示了人类居然如此没人性。

 Note:该并列连词中的“as”可以用but/rather 替换  如：It is not so much the actual population of the world but its rate of increase which is

important.

 重要的与其说是世界人口总数，倒不如说是世界人口增长率。 not so much as…

 Not such much as...这个结构相当于“not even…”通常翻译为“甚至不…,甚至没有…”.请

注意与not so much …as…这个结构的区别。  例如： He didn’t so much as ask me to sit down.  他甚至没有请我坐下。

 He hadn't so much as his fare home.

 他甚至连回家的路费都没有了。比较级+than to do…句型

 由比较级与+than to do…结合在一起的句型，通常翻译为“不至于做…”  例如：you ought to know better than to go swimming on such a cold day.  你不至于在这么冷的天气去游泳吧？

 I have more sense than to tell him about our plan.

 我不至于傻到会把我们的计划告诉他。

 I had a better command of English than to make such foolish mistakes.  我的英语学得很好，不至于犯这样愚蠢的错误。
