The Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important festivals in China, which is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

The festival dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty. In the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), people sent round moon cakes to their relatives as gifts in expression of their best wishes of family reunion. This day was also considered as a harvest festival since fruits, vegetables and grain had been harvested by this time and food was abundant.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is an evening celebration when families gather together to eat moon cakes, which are the special food for this festival, and enjoy the round moon. They can look back on the past and look forward to the future together. On that night, the moon appears to be at its roundest and brightest. The full moon is a symbol for family reunion, which is why that day is also known as the Festival of Reunion. Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon boat festival is another Chinese traditional feast day. It is said that Quyuan, a great poet in ancient China, took his own life in the Miluojiang River on that day. In honor of his illustrious life, people throw Zongzi, glutinous rice dumpling, into rivers to keep him from fishes to avoid being licked up. Besides, when the festival comes, it is already early summer, so families hang mugworts over the doorhead and drink yellow wine to git rid of diseases. Spring Festival

The Lantern Festival(元宵节) falls on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, usually in February or March. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC

25 AD) , it had become a festival with great meaning.

Yuanxiao is the special food for the Lantern Festival. It is believed that Yuanxiao is named after a palace maid(宫女) , Yuan Xiao, of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty. Yuanxiao is a kind of sweet dumpling, which is made with sticky rice flour(面粉) filled with sweet stuffing. And the Festival is named after

the famous dumpling. It is very easy to cook-simply dump them in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes and eat them as a dessert.

"Guessing lantern riddles" is an important part of the Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on pieces of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to deliver their answers. If they are right, they will get a small gift. The activity appeared during people's enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty ( 960-1279).

As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom(智慧), it has become more and more popular.

In the daytime of the Festival, performances such as a dragon lantern dance, a lion dance, a land boat dance, walking on stilts(高跷) and beating drums while dancing will be staged, On the night, besides beautiful lanterns, fireworks form a beautiful scene. Most families spare some fireworks from the Spring Festival and let them off on that day. Some local governments will even organize a fireworks party. On the night when the first full moon enters the New Year, people become really excited by the fireworks and the bright moon in the sky.
