Task1 Who are they?

Waterboy : an only 9 or 10 -year-old boy, who delivered water for the workers Howard Carter : an English archaeologist and Egyptologist. Lord Carnarvon : Carter’s wealthy patron Lady Evelyn Herbert: Carnarvon’s daughter

Task2 Answer the questions after reading. Introduction

Why were the pharaohs buried with their possessions and mummified their bodies after death?

Because the ancient Egyptians believed their pharaohs would need possessions and their bodies in the afterlife.

Chapter 1 The Waterboy

1.Why was Carter feeling depressed?

Because Carter and his workers didnt find any tombs yet when the deadline was drawing near. 2.Why was the waterboy the most important person on the whole site? Because without a waterboy like him, the workers could die of thirst.

Chapter 2 Sixteen Steps

He found sth. under the soil which turned out to be a step leading underground.

2. What did they find on the surface of the large plaster block at the foot of the staircase?

The imprints of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Painted on a wooden sarcophagus. Large Egyptian eye-designs were used to guard against evil.

the walls decorated with paintings and hieroglyphs; pictures of the boy king; a scene of fully mummified king, encased in a wooden shrine; a wine jar, boxes made of reed and papyrus, small figurines of Osiris… 2. How did the Boy King die? Why?_

He may have been murdered, although why isn’t known.
