Personal Essay In the spring semester of 2016, I met some great guys in my biology lab group, and please allow me to introduce them for you. They are Hannah Foley, Risa Vo and Kailin Hurinenko. We have been working on the carnivores of the Serengeti for our Snapshot Serengeti Project which is our most significant part in the lab. The whole study system is recorded in a well-organized application, so our job is to make hypothesis and ask questions according to the reading materials (which is offered by our TA), and then utilize the information provided by the application to analyze the data. Also, we make efforts to find a proper method to answer our question and verify our original hypothesis. Finally, we draw our conclusion. Sounds like a pretty huge work, but if you simplify your entire project into several small units, like making observation, asking questions, formulating a hypothesis, finding approaches to collect data, then analyzing and making a conclusion. This sequence is really based onscientific routine so you can rely on it all the time, however, you may encounter different kinds of problems during the whole process, so the question is how to figure out those small problems in each units that matters. After working with my teammates, I believe interaction with your teammates is the key to figure out such problems. For instance, when we were building our density graph for different species to study their migration patterns, we had difficulties in defining the meaning of x axis and y axis. Kailin refers to the example graphs, so we put longitude into x and latitude into y.After that, we were analyzing the graphs represented species density from wet season and dry season so we could see their migration direction. Kailin said they were moving to North because they showed on the graph with a higher latitude. While, her statement led me to ask about the location of our study area: the Serengeti Park. Because if the park is located in the southern hemisphere, higher latitude would represent more distant from the equator. Then we searched the location information online and found that the Serengeti Park is actually in Africa, southern hemisphere. So we corrected our conclusion, and found those species were actually moving to south, more exciting, we found there were water source at the southern part, that coincide our hypothesis perfectly. In this case, we were working as a group and we were thinking critically. If you get some good points, you are going to share it with your partners, it doesn’t matter if your idea is right or wrong, as long as it is related to our question. Because your idea not only offer us a brand new angle to look at this question but also inspire others’ logic thinking. Just like throwing a stone into still water and the ripples will spread out in rings. In my perspective, thinking independently and then share your opinions with your partners could be a really effective way to solve problems. If you can establish this kind of interaction among your group members, you will find yourself having a much broader perspective during your study process. At least it is true in my group.All four of us feel quite free to talk to each other if anyone have any kinds of new findings. So we we work in an active and effective way. To sum up, in this project, what we are studying is more than the subject itself, it also cultivates our ability of working as a team. I believe, communication will always play a crucial role in your group. Compared with groups that only divided their assignment equally to each person and working independently, it seems to be much easier to get your job done, if you talk to someone in your group.
