Translation Practice: Passage 1： Early Settlers in the New World The English arrived in North America with hopes of duplicating the exploits of the Spanish in South America, where explorers had discovered immense fortunes in gold and silver. Although Spain and England shared a pronounced lust for wealth, differences between the two cultures were profound. Catholic Spain had, by expelling its Jews and Moors (犹太人和摩尔人), achieved the spiritual security of a united church. To the Spanish policy-makers, the New World was a place that offered Spaniards adventure, romance, and religious converts（皈依者）, while it offered to the Spanish crown（西班牙王室） a financial base for the Haspburg’s （哈布斯堡王朝）European adventures. England, unlike Spain, continued in the 16th and 17th centuries to be torn by political and religious disunity. Because of this English background of civil conflict, English-speaking America, where there were no religious wars is often described as a land of refuge to which man and women came in order to enjoy the religious and political freedom denied them in their homeland. This conception of America’s beginnings in the centurey is for the most part true. Some college students who previously drank in bars and lounges under the watchful supervision of bouncers (夜总会，酒吧等的保安人员)（not to mention owners eager to keep their liquor licenses） now retreat to the sanctuary of their fraternity houses and apartments, where they no longer control their behavior, their drinking. The boomerang effect has also played a role in attempts to reduce the availability of illicit drugs. As fields are burned and contraband (违禁品) confiscated, the price of street drugs has skyrocketed to a point where cheap alternatives have begun to compete in the marketplace. Could my days be running away by themselves and if so where are they now? 译文2：Swallows may have gone, but there is a time of return; willow trees may have died back, but there is a time of regreening; peach blossoms may have fallen, but they will bloom again. Now, you the wise, tell me, why should our days leave us, never returning? — If they had been stolen by someone, who could it be? Where could he hide then? If they had made the escape themselves, then where could they stay at the moment? 译文3：If swallows go away, they will come back again. If willows wither, they will turn green again. If peach blossoms fade, they will flower again. But, tell me, you the wise, why should our days go by never to return? Perhaps they have been stolen by someone. But who could it be and where could he hide them? Perhaps they have just run away by themselves. But where could they be at the present moment? 译文4：When the swallows have gone, there is still time to return; when the willow trees have become withered, there is still time to see green; when the peach flowers have already faded, there is still time to blossom. But please tell me, the genius, why then have my days gone and never returned? If some people have stolen them, then who are they? And where are they hidden? If they have escaped by themselves, then where are they now? 译文5：Swallow are gone and they will come back one day. Poplars and willows wither and they will turn green again. Peach blossoms wither and they will produce flowers again. But, your wise, can tell me why our days are gone for ever? Because someone steals them? Who’ s he? Where do they hide?
