A Conversation Between Grass Mum and Daughter (一对小草母女的对话)

One day on my way home, while waiting on a traffic light, I rolled down the car window, and happened to listen in a conversation between two plants on the kerb.

‘Mum, I am thirsty,’ said the little one, complaining. ‘Oh, dear, we will have to wait for the rain.’ ‘When is it going to rain, Mum?’

‘Well, I don’t know, only see it when it comes,’ replied Mum, with a sigh. ‘Be patient, ok?’ ‘Ok,’ answered the little one, with a touch of disappointment.

After a little while, she asked again: ‘Mum, why only us in the space?’

‘That is not true; there are a lot of them outside.’ ‘Why, then, I couldn’t see them?’

‘You will see them when you grow up taller.’ ‘Then when shall I grow up taller?’ ‘Won’t take long, dear, be patient, ok?’

‘Ok,’ answered the daughter, with a touch of disappointment.

But after a little while, she asked again: ‘Mum, I am cold, can I hug you?’

‘Oh, no, my dear, you can’t!’ ‘Why can’t?!’

‘Because the wind is always blowing us in same direction, and never are we able to touch each other!’

‘But I can walk to you, can’t I?’

‘No, no, you can’t, my dear, you will risk your life if you do.’ ‘What is it the risk of my life?’

‘It is, is…oh, my dear, no more questions, you will understand when you grow up taller.’

But apparently the little one couldn’t keep her mouth idle. After a while, she started again: ‘the smell is disgusting.’

‘Well, that is the emission of the car,’ said Mum, who now seemed to be happy enough to answer a question to her good knowledge. ‘What is a car?’

‘A car is what you see on every moment of your life.’ ‘But what is the emission?’

‘That is, that is, a type of gas produced by the car,’ answered Mum, though sounding a little loss of confidence.

‘But why is the gas so stinky?’

‘Well, well, dear, I can’t answer you,’ said Mum, rather impatiently, as if she was annoyed with her, or even with herself for not knowing enough. ‘I don’t know myself. You will have to get used to it!’

‘But I could not and would not get used to it!’ ‘Then you have to wait for the wind.’ ‘When does the wind come?’

‘That won’t take long, be patient, patient, will you?’

‘Ok, ok.’ answered the daughter, with a heavier touch of disappointment.

But, after another while, the little one said once again: ‘Mum, my toes are sore.’

‘Oh, my dear, the cement is hard, and you need to feel the soft part to stretch your feet.’ ‘I hate the cement, why is it everywhere?’ ‘Well, I don’t know again.’

‘Mum, why so, why don’t you know?’ insisted the little one, beginning to show her little temper. ‘Well, my love, I don’t know, I was born right in this place and no one had ever told me!’ ‘Why didn’t you ask your mum?’

‘I didn’t have a mum; I mean, I mean I never know where my mum is.’

‘Ah, really? Mum? pity, mama, without a mum….’ murmured the little one to herself. ‘Yes, my love, sweet, you shall be content, that at least you have me stand beside you.’

With this, and after a little while, the daughter did appear contented, and didn’t raise any more questions. They embraced each other by their affectionate smiles, and when a pleasant breeze suddenly blew in their way, both of them were saluting elegantly and happily to the little sky, with their little laughter filling the entire little space.
