Stage1 Reading Practice

Step1 Presentation

William Butler Yeats(1865-1939), 爱尔兰诗人、剧作家和散文家,著名的神秘主义者,是“爱尔兰文艺复兴运动”的领袖,也是艾比剧院(Abbey Theatre)的创建者之一,叶芝先后写过26部戏剧剧本。一生创作丰富,备受敬仰。其诗吸收浪漫主义、唯美主义、神秘主义、象征主义和玄学诗的精华,几经变革,最终熔炼出独特的风格。其艺术被视为英语诗从传统到现代过渡的缩影。叶芝曾于1923年获得诺贝尔文学奖,获奖的理由是“用鼓舞人心的诗篇,以高度的艺术形式表达了整个民族的精神风貌(inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form that gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation)”。被诗人艾略特誉为“当代最伟大的诗人”。934年,威廉·巴特勒·叶芝和拉迪亚德·吉卜林共同获得歌德堡诗歌奖。

D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), 20世纪英国作家,是20世纪英语文学中最重要的人物之一,也是最具争议性的作家之一。主要成就包括小说、诗歌、戏剧、散文、游记和书信。劳伦斯的作品过多地描写了色情,受到过猛烈的抨击和批评。但他在作品中力求探索人的灵魂深处,并成功地运用了感人的艺术描写,因此,从他生前直到迄今为止,他的作品一直被世界文坛所重视。劳伦斯的小说作品中最著名的包括《儿子与情人》(1913)、《虹》(1915)、《恋爱中的女人》(1920)和《查泰莱夫人的情人》(1928

George Eliot(1819-1880), 出生在华威郡一个中产阶级商人家庭,19世纪英语文学最有影响力的小说家之一,也是世界文学史上最伟大的小说家之一。其主要作品有长篇小说《亚当·比德》、《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》、《织工马南传》、《罗慕拉》、《费利克斯·霍尔特》、《米德尔马契》、《丹尼尔·德龙达》等。

Robert Burns(1759-1796),苏格兰农民诗人,在英国文学史上占有特殊重要的地位。他复活并丰富了苏格兰民歌;他的诗歌富有音乐性,可以歌唱。彭斯的诗歌作品多使用苏格兰方言,并多为抒情短诗,如歌颂爱情的名篇《我的爱人像朵红红的玫瑰》和抒发爱国热情的《苏格兰人》等。对苏格兰乡村生活的生动描写使他的诗歌作品具有民族特色和艺术魅力。

1.luve 苏格兰方言,= love, 注意大写L表达了重要唯一的内涵。 2.melodie 来自法语,1920世纪法国从德国的抒情歌曲学来的,是带伴奏的艺术歌曲。19世纪的melodie一般用严肃抒情诗做歌词,钢琴伴奏的独唱演员演唱。Melodie 的特点是诗歌与音乐的完美统一。因此,melodie 准确地说不是乐曲曲调,而是歌曲 3.play'd = played 诗歌用字

Appreciate more poems of famous poets, try to understand them and the culture behind them.

Stage2 Vocabulary and Reading

Check the meanings of words in Activity1 on page36, and answer question: Which words can you use to describe feelings or a relationship between people.

Answer the questions about the words in the box. Step2 While-reading

a) Read the passage quickly and choose the best summary. (Activity4)

b) Read the passage carefully and number the sentences in the correct order. (Activity3) c) Read the passage again and answer questions in Activity5. Step3 Post-reading

Work in pairs and discuss your answers to the questions. (Activity7)
