The Old Man and the Sea Whenever I felt frustrated, I would sat down quietly and read The Old Man and the Sea again. Because it is my favorite book, and it can cheer me up. The Old Man and the Sea is a very famous book written by Hemingway, and it was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. The story is about an old but brave man, Santiago. One day, he fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream. Unfortunately, he hadn’t taken even a fish for eighty-four days. However, he didn’t give up. After two days’ fighting, he hooked a great marlin. On the way of his returning, the bloody fish attracted sharks. The sharks hit the fish and ate all they could. Therefore, Santiago only brought back a big long white spine with a huge tail of the marlin. Though failure is bitter, he faces it and accepts the pain and loneliness. Beyond the suffering and disappointment, the old man still sees hopes, “Hope is the duty of man.” Life is a deep and rough sea, but the old man loves its beauty, power and mystery. I think, life itself is an endless pursuit. It’s a long and bumpy road, and fills with difficulties. But if we had a brave and confident heart to meet the challenges, we would always be the winners! Just like the eminent sentence in the book, “Man is not made for defeat, because a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” When I was a little girl, I was shy and timid. So every morning, my father or my mother sent me to school. After I graduated from the primary school, my parents thought I should be more self-contained, and go to school alone. Thus, my father decided to teach me how to ride a bike. At first, I couldn’t control the bike totally, because it swayed all the time. If my father didn’t hold the handlebar, I would fall down from the bike and cut my knee. So I was afraid and wanted to draw back. Then, my father told me, “You must overcome it. There are more big difficulties in our lives and waiting us to solve. If we were afraid these little problems, how can we face the setback? ” After his words, I was full of courage. I exercised many times and began to ride bike by myself. Finally, I succeed. Both of my parents felt excited and celebrated to me. Yes, we should be brave and try our best to overcome difficulties. We can’t give up easily. Besides, we all know the big earthquake which happened in Wenchuan. It was a sad and shock earthquake. All things lay in ruins in a few seconds, and the people suffered extremely. There were many people been dead. Many people were wounded under the falling building. People felt painful but they were staunch. They waited rescue persons to save them. A 60-year-old woman, she was so great that she had insisted 196 hours. Many people were saved after 4 days. They were brave and optimistic, so they were still living. The people who injured showed the willpower and they were all heroes as the fisherman. Maybe in many people’s opinion, this novel is so short and simple. In fact, however, it has deeper meaning. Just like Hemingway’s words: A good writing is a grand iceberg. Only 1/8 of it is on the sea. The brief words could make readers find the deep thoughts that are contained in the rest of the iceberg under the sea. Therefore, every time I read the book, I can find some other different and meaningful senses. The Old Man and the Sea is a good book. I learn many from the book. It teach me a person should be firm and brave in our lives. We can’t be afraid of problems and give up. We must try our best to overcome the problems. We should trust ourselves we can do it.
