Whydo you select your major? There’s a saying in china, “Selecting major is the second college entrance examination.”Yes we should use the word SELECT, because the reality is there are 12 big subject categories including 80 first-grade majors and 358 second-grade majors. I can say this is like a zillion! If you make a mistake on this issue, it may influence your future greatly. So only after you fully understand the reason and basis of selecting your major, can you make a wise and regretless choice. So basically there are three standards for you to consider, namely, interest, personality, occupation. First, the major you select should be the one you are interested in or at least should not be the one you repel. Think about this, your major is something that you are going to focus on, put your effort to for the rest 4 years. And this is college, not high school, no teachers and parents will be there and urge you to study anymore, it will be all on your own. How can you study a subject consciously with all your heart and soul if you don’t like it at all? And imagine your life be immerged into something you repel for a whole four-year time! I bet you won’t enjoy such jail-like college life. Second, your major should suit your personality as well as your superior ability. I’m not requiring it to be originally set up for you, but at least it can’t be opposed to who you are. Actually in the modern society, lots of occupations have certain specialties that match with certain personalities. For example, changeable and creative people are more suitable for journalism, acting, writing, diplomacy or so; earnest and rigorous people are more suitable for major like accountancy, redact ology and analysis.And as for the aspect of superior ability, different people are quite different on this point. And the ability I refer to here can be divided into two kinds, which are general ability and special ability. General abilities are something like observation, memory, attention, logically thinking ability, imagination; while special abilities include singing, dancing, painting, composing and so on. Once you are in the major that is compatible with who you are (relevant to your personality and your ability), everything will go on in an unexpectedly smooth way. The third one, which is also the most important one, occupation.That is all the reason why we need to study for entire 16 years, the final goal is to find a decent job and lead a fulfilled life. The job we are going to take in the future, to a great extent, is related to the major we choose in college. But again, the reality is cruel, data show that the number of graduates in 2015 is 7,490,000, 220,000 more than the number in 2014,and this record will always reach a new highest one every next year.So the employment situation is so stern that you really should take it seriously. Make sure your major can stand out under such huge employment pressure. You also should have good knowledge of what is needed urgently in the society, and what kind of jobs you are most capable of. Then after graduation you won’t be too confused and helpless to stand on your own. Yes, I know this is a sophisticated problem indeed! But this is also what we must go through in our lives. And it is because this is an intricate problem which is also vital to our future that we should select our majors with great care and patience. Your major is a key, and only the right key can open the only door to your brightest future. And last tips, please remember you are the own master of your life, don’t let your parents or anyone elsetake control on this problem; make sure you are going to be fully responsible for your decision; and once you’ve made up your mind, please be determined, stick to it and don’t regret.
