Whos the thief?

At 3:27 P.M. on August 5th, John C. Rockbottom reported the theft of $ 100,000 from the vault (地下室) of the Midland National Park Bank, of which he had been manager for twenty years.

There were only four people who had access (途径) to the vault. One of these was Rockbottom himself. A second was Henry Browne, an accountant who had once worked as a locksmith. Browne had the habit of making regular trips to the water fountain, which was beside the vault. The third suspect was Thomas Smythe, the evil-looking midget (侏儒) who was employed as the bank janitor. Because of his slight size, Smythe could have slipped unseen into the vault. The last suspect was Miss Spinster, the chief teller whose husband had mysteriously vanished in 2001. Miss Spinster had made a deposit in the vault on the day of the theft.

In court, the following information came to light: the bank was equipped with an automatic timing device which caused the vault to open at 11:00 A.M. and to close at 2:00 P.M.. It was impossible for the vault to be open except at those hours. The walls of the vault were reinforced concrete and the lock had not tampered with.

Smythe said that he had arrived late for work on the 5th, since he had had a slight head cold. His time card was punched at 2:30 PM..

Rockbottom testified (作证) that he had entered the vault at 1:50 to make a thorough inspection. Ten minutes later he had gone home to eat. When I returned from lunch, Mr. Rockbottom said, “I reinspected the vault and discovered the theft. Miss Spinsters testimony created a sensation in the courtroom. She admitted that she had dropped large sums of money at the racetrack and was heavily in debt. But she protested her innocence of the theft. Witness had seen her leave the bank on her lunch hour at 1:30 P.M..
