Despite worries about their potential to distract people from reading, social networking websites actually promotes reading. A recent study by two Harvard sociologists on the reading habit of college students shows that 60 percent of heavy social website users say that they enjoy reading, yet only 40 percent of non-users find reading enjoyable. The study also finds that while most (73.2%) students never pick up a book out of classroom, it doesn’t mean that they don’t read. It’s just that they spend their leisure time browsing social networking sites. Social websites such as Facebook have come to stay. It is futile to fight the trend towards online reading. Perhaps the sensible choice for us is to embrace the new media in the Internet age.
