Culture shock

Culture shock is an experience a person may have when he moves to a cultural environment which is different from his own; it is also the personal disorientation a person may feel when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new country, a move between social environments, or simply transition to another type of life. Moving to a new country and experiencing a new culture is a deeply enriching experience on multiple levels. It opens people to new experiences, beliefs, and ways of being. It is, however, not an experience that is only positive: experiencing another culture can also involve moments of difficulty and pain. Frequently, individuals will experience many negative feelings such as confusion, anxiety, loneliness, homesickness, frustration, etc. when they go to a new country.. Often, it is the deeper cultural differences in mindset, customs and interpersonal interaction that trigger this phenomenon and turn cultural transition into a struggle.

Culture shock reflects on value orientation. As we all know, different countries have different culture. It is inevitable that the culture difference makes culture shock and has impacted on value orientation, especially when people are abroad. Westerners advocate individualism, they worship independence and freedom. However, the oriental advocate collectivism. People, who first go abroad alone or just stay there a short-time, are not accustomed to foreign ways of act. For example, there is an interesting phenomenon at the arrival gates of international airports. Usually there is a group of family members or a host waiting to meet the Chinese, Japanese and other Asians who are getting off the airplane. Often there is no one waiting to meet the westerners who are arriving. They just collect their baggage and then take a taxi or a bus to their destination. Apparently, the Asians think that on one arriving in an unfamiliar should be left to find their on their own. They need people at this time. The Asians will feel lonely and helpless if there are no people waiting for them, and they think westerners don’t care their friends and family members. Westerners are more likely to assume that certain predictable services will be available, such as hotel booking counters and transportation services and that they can find these and the city and already learned a lot about the airport, hotels and tourist site, what people he will need to contact for particular purposes ones he gets there, where to get a good dinner, and more. They enjoy themselves.

Culture shock reflects on social usage. An extensive usage of society exists about culture shock. An individual who moves to a new environment, as immigrants, refugees, sojourning employees, etc., need to learn how to adapt another customary ways which indigene live. The degree to which individuals experience culture shock varies greatly depending on their personalities, their past life experiences, the distance between their culture of origin and the new culture. In a word, it is social usage that impact on individual which may makes people feel upset. For instance, the certain customs in the United States begin to irritate individual, he should consider punctuality—the need to be ―on time. Americans look at their watches frequently; they try to be on time for work, for class, for meetings, for games, for religious services, and even for certain events. If he arranges to meet Americans for lunch at 12 but to meet at 12:30, you will perhaps find that they have either left or eaten without you, or become very annoyed even if they are not hungry. Maybe he is annoyed that American friendliness

seems superficial, or that he unable to smoke without other people complaining; or that Americans always act as though they are in a hurry; or that the food never seems to be prepared in the right way. Perhaps he does not even feel annoyed, just homesick. He might find himself angry at the time, or depressed, or suffering from a vague physical illness. You may begin to dislike the United States and its people.

Culture shock reflects on daily life. When people go to a new and unfamiliar place, there are many differences between new place and his country, he still know less about the new environment even he had learned some culture about it. Then, he will sometimes feel comfortable and embarrass in his daily life. For example, in the US, most of the time, people buy flowers by the dozen, and twelve is definitely an even number. The Asian had never heard of the "even/odd" customs until they read about them here, he may buy flowers by the odd before he know that. It perhaps makes him embarrass when he visit a patient. In Japan it is the custom to bow when greeting, or nod your head to strangers you make eye contact with. When meeting someone very important to show respect you should bow lower than them and pause for a moment with your head down. When some westerners do that, they will feel comfortable. In Greece, for example, smiling when you meet someone for the first time appears as a weakness. Many Greeks think that Americans smile too much and therefore are weak, and many Americans think that the Greeks are too stoic.

Negotiation is a solution of conflict and it is used in our daily life every day. With globalization, culture shock has impacted on negotiation. Every country has its own culture, history, usage and so on. Culture shock involves culture difference and culture difference influence the exact communication. Negotiants’ language, body language and personal image will make obstacle in our negotiation. We can’t understand true ideas of other party or we misunderstand others act, so that the negotiation can’t be going on. Culture shock affects personal benefit. In international business negotiations, negotiators in high-context culture always express opinions in a subtle and indirect way, people are rarely reject or refute directly. That makes a permanent friendship and long-term collaboration. People are more likely to get benefit in a negotiation.
