According to the passage, there are some solutions to prevent the cane toad from spreading. In the lecture, however, the professor asserts that these measures are likely either to be unsuccessful or to cause unwanted environment damage. First, by pointing out the fact that, young toads and their eggs can be transported through waterways, the professor claims that a national fence won't stop the spread of the toad, which contradicts the idea of the reading passage that a national fence is effective to prevent that.

Second, the professor contends that the untrained volunteers would destroy many native frogs, since they cannot tell the cane toad apart from native frogs, which rebuts the author's idea that the government can organize volunteers to capture and destroy the toads.

Third, though the author argues a disease-causing virus can be developed to limit the population of the toad by control their reproduce, the professor warns that the virus could have terrible consequences for cane toads in their original habitat. She reminds us cane toads is a vital part of the ecosystem, and that they will be eliminated if animals infected by the virus reach the original habitat of the toad.


Exercise 5

According to the passage, grade inflation cannot be changed. In the lecture, however, the professor asserts that there are some measures to avoid grade inflation, which undermines the educational principle.

First, though the author argues that students may be depressed without grade inflation and lose interest in academic, the professor asserts that students should be told that school is a place for knowledge, not scores. He states students who accept that won’t easily give up their ambition.

Second, the professor contends that evaluations should be based on teaching styles and working attitude by conducting evaluations before the final exam. This contradicts to the idea of the reading passage that grade inflation can help professors get promotion or keep his position.

Third, the professor cast doubt on the author’s idea that grade inflation benefits students in job market. He claims that school should explain relative position of the students besides traditional scores.
