Personal Statement

Gu Yi

As a well-known Chinese saying goes,To get rid of poverty, first build roads. A road itself does not only link two places, but also connect people with hope and happiness.

In 2012, I was admitted to the School of Transportation at Southeast University(SEU) in Nanjing, China. The School of Transportation is the top in China. I remember the professors words in the first class, An Introduction of Transportation, The core of transportation is to balance demand and supply. We should always keep in mind that its inappropriate to blindly increase supply to meet the rapidly growing demand. Thus at the start of the sophomore year, instead of choosing the most popular one, Road and Bridge Engineering, I chose traffic engineering in order to allow me gain knowledge of sustainable transportation development. Inspired by selecting Traffic Engineering as my major, I have earned 96 points and 93 points in the exams of Road Capacity Analysis and Urban Public Transit Planning, Operations and Management respectively. It is Professor Chen, who taught me that designing public transit systems is the most sustainable way to resolve the contradiction of social resources and traffic demand. She kindled my enthusiasm for urban public transit and being a transport planner focusing on public transportation. Through reading Urban Transit: Operations, Planning, and Economics by Vukan R. Vuchic, I have a brief understanding of how to design and run a transport system. From Asian Urban Transport Model by Lu Ximing, I comprehend how transit-oriented cities are formed, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo.

But the purpose of learning is to practice. When I was a junior student, I got involved in an optimization project aimed at improving the reliability of school buses at SEU so that students and teachers can walk shorter distances to bus stations and waste less time waiting. I distributed questionnaires ,stood at the bus stop for many hours to record the arrival time and the number of passengers , and processed data from early morning to late night. Finally we wrote a complete report and sent it to the relevant department. Last winter, during my one-month internship in Transportation Authority of Nantong City, my hometown, I rode around the downtown, finding safety defects in some main intersections. I wrote a report on how severe these defects are and how to deal with them, and sent it to the related government officer. They seriously read my report and planned to submit it to the district People's Congress meeting for discussion this year. I have also sought to further my skills outside of class, and as general secretary of the Students’ International Communication Association I planned and organized

many activities to enhance members’ international communication skills, receiving excellent feedback from both Chinese and foreign participants. During my term as general secretary the influence of the association grew significantly, and we were awarded the honor of being named a “four-star association” for the first time. In addition, I am an active member of JOIN chorus and played the role of Eponine in the Opera Les Misérables on New Years Day. I enjoy the satisfaction of interacting with people in a wide range of circumstances and bringing joy to others.

My career goal is to be a transport planner and design public transit systems. After graduation, I would like to work in Singapore for 2-3 years to enrich my practical experience and enroll in doctoral study if I can find a really suitable research topic. After that, I hope to return to China to realize my dream, working as a transport planner and helping government departments, especially those in developing cities, to design, improve and manage public transport systems via the application of advanced theories and technologies.

The knowledge I have gained so far is an important start for me to become a qualified transport planner. The Master of Science (Transportation Systems and Management) at National University of Singapore would provide the ideal complement to my research experiences and is my top choice for postgraduate study. The location in Singapore will offer me more opportunities to find out how this garden-like city with limited nature resources builds a world-class public transportation system and coordinates the development of land distributions and transportation systems.

I believe my prior study in this field and my experience have prepared me well for the challenges of graduate school, and qualify me as a candidate who can be a contributor to your university and my chosen career.
