在英语中，afraid这个词是形容词，而且经常使用，在用法上与一般的形容词不同。

1、一般来说，形容词常用作定语，而afraid 虽是形容词，却在句中主要用作表语。

e.g .Don’t be afraid .I will go with you .别害怕，我和你去。

2、be afraid for somebody /something相当于be anxious about，后接令人担心或处于危险中的人或物。

e.g. The mother is very much afraid for her son who is seriously ill .母亲很担心儿子，他病得很重。

3、be afraid of somebody /something(=fear somebody /something )意为“害怕 /畏惧某人或某物”。

e.g.He is never afraid of difficulties .(= He never fears difficulties .)他从来不怕困难。

注意：在非正式场合，fear很少使用。

She was afraid of snakes. 她害怕蛇。

4、be afraid to do 表示主语因有一种害怕的心理而不敢做某事，相当于dare not do something，不定式的动作往往是有意识的。

e.g. Some children are afraid to go upstairs in the dark .有的孩子在黑暗中怕上楼。

5、be afraid of doing something (=be worried /afraid that -clause.)意为“担心将会遭到某种情况或害怕发生某种后果。

e.g. Wei Hai was always afraid of being late for school .魏海总是担心上学迟到。

6、be afraid that -clause (=be worried that-clause )意为“担心”。that从句用来说明害怕的具体性质。

e.g. The naughty boy was afraid that his teacher would blame him.这个淘气的男孩怕老师责备他。

这一结构可与“be afraid of +ving”转换。上例句可变成：

The naughty boy was afraid of beingblamed by his teacher .

7、I am /We are afraid that -clause (=I am sorry,but .../ We are sorry,but ...)意为“恐怕，很抱歉”，这一结构常被用来引出带有歉意的回绝。

e.g. I am afraid I can not give you any help .( =I can not give you any help ,I am afraid.)我恐怕不能给你帮助。

8、I am afraid so 和I am afraid not 常用作简短答语，婉转地表示自己的态度或看法。

e.g.“He is the best student in the class .”“I am afraid so.”

“他是班上最好的学生。”“恐怕是最好的。”
