USE EXAMPLES TO ILLUSTRATE THE INFLUENCES OF TRADITION AND RELIGION TO BRITISH SPORTS, AND THE MORAL VALUE BEHIND SOME OF THE SPORTS. ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENCES IN ATTITUDE TOWARDS SPORTS BETWEEN BRITISH AND

CHINESE?

QUESTION: Use examples to illustrate the influences of tradition and religion to British sports, and the moral value behind some of the sports. Are there any differences in attitude towards sports between British and Chinese?

British are known about their long and influential history, as well as their sports. The Britishhave invented many modern sports, such as soccer, cricket, tennis, snooker, etc.

Even though British remind us of standard gentlemen, they are definitely not physically weak. They value physical strength very much, which can be learnt through their attitude towards sports games. Early in 17th century, the famous philosopher and educationalist John Locke wrote about Gentleman Education in his published book Some Thoughts Concerning Education in which he talked children should develop their moral, enlarge their knowledge and build up through sports. Deeply influenced by his idea, the Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, also known as the Father of Olympic, firth came up with the idea of modern Olympic Games. British took part in all the modern Olympic Games despite many difficulties occurring later.

Just like the Olympic spirits, British regard sports as a means of building up, cooperating with others and to seek ones limits. In fact, Britain is the birthplace of many modern games.

Lets begin with soccer. One must admit that British are the biggest fans of this fascinating sport game. It was at 19th century, the Britain was expiring a very fast developing stage, thousands of unemployed rural people rushed into big cities hoping for a better life. At the same time, Britain expanded their political and military power in the world. In this background, a sharp mind, a strong body and the sense of team-work were required if one wanted to lead a successful life. Thus, many young teenager boys at the private schools around London were encouraged by their teachers to practice soccer, since it can serve as both physical training and a way to strengthen group work. After those teenagers graduation, many of them went to Oxbridge to have further study. They also brought the soccer ball with them. That was the start of the popularization of soccer.Soon after that, the game was introduced to the general public, then the world.

The soccer is the ideal hypostatization of chivalry. Players, especially British players, are all the embodiments of courage, strength and confidence. British players are famous for their gallantry, Stubbornness and aggressiveness. At the field, they all act as a knight, being the perfect example of fairness, courage, honest, self-sacrificing and honor. British soccer is remarkable for its speed and strength, not for its strategy.

Besides soccer, tennis is invented at Britain as well.It was originally invented by French royal, and then brought to Britain, where it was perfected. From14th century, tennis became a very importantentertainment for English nobles. Because that, tennis was referred as a noble game.

Englishestablished many rules for tennis, a played a rather important role when popularizing the game. Owing to the vast colonies, the world soon got to know the game played by Englisharistocrat.

The game now is generally known as a good way to build ones body. One can

either enjoy it outside, or do it indoors, to escape a long working days tiredness. Besides that, it can improvedcomprehensive quality when they practice tennis. After all, running, swinging the racket and batting are excellent ways to improve ones skill, enhance ones strength and reinforce ones mental ability. That is the reason why tennis is so popular now. It is truly a way to enjoy life.

British take great pleasure to introduce the game to the world. The first and the oldest grand slam is the WimbledonThe Championship, which is first funded in Wimbledon in 1877.The fierce and challenging game is appreciated by the whole world now.

The last but not the least game I want to talk about is cricket. It is called gentleman's game. In 1750s, it was mainly played by children, then by pubic since it requires more coordination skills of eyes and hands, and less body contacts. It isnt as fierce as soccer so it is not necessary to worry about injuries. The cricket advocatessportsmanship and fairplay.

From soccer, tennis and cricket, I think one can safely conclude that the tradition and religionact a big role concerning British sports games. In those games, strength, skills and speed are important to win the game, yet fairplay and sportsmanship are what make them world-wide.

British regard sports games as a way to keep fit and enjoy life. However, in China, people use it as a method to gain frame and money. I do believe if Chinese do not change their attitude towards sports, there would be less and less teenagers to take part in this special field to simply enjoy life and to be healthy, and the result might be disastrous.
