The Great Wall(长城) The Great Wall The Great Wall of China is considered to be the only man-made project visible from the moon. Although it was once thought to have been built entirely during the Qin Dynasty between 221 and 208 BC, it is now believed to have been started earlier. The 15-foot-high, 25-foot-wide, 1,500-mile-long structure was undoubtedly built to keep out invading enemies. To the common people of the empire, who had been forced to build the wall, it was not worth it, however. The wall, and other public works completed by the Qin Dynasty,had caused great losses of wealth and human life in the country. As a result,an angry population rose up in rebellion against the Qin Dynasty,and in 207 BC the Han Dynasty began. Since the Chinese governmaent drew up family planning as one of the basic state policies in 1979, the country has adopted various measures and achieved great success in birth control. The total birth rate has been decreasing gradually. However, at present, China’s population is still growing rapidly, It is reported that every year the population of this country increases by an extra 15 million and China is encountering a birth peak during the 90’s of the 20th. It is obvious that China’s economic development and the improvement of people’s living standards have been and will be greatly affected by the population. Therefore, to control poputation growth more strictly is clearly essential to the country’s reforms and economic development. We should restress the importance of birth control and call on the whole nation to take mure effective actions. 控制生育——中国发展的关键 自从1979年中国政府把计划生育作为基本国策以来，中国采取厂各种措施并在控制生育方面取得了重大成就。人口增长率逐年下降。 然而，目前中国人口仍然增长很快。据报道中国人口每年增加1500多万，20世纪90年代中国正遇到生育高峰。显而易见，中国的经济发展和人民生活水平的改善已经受到了并将更大地受到人口的影响。 因此，严格控制人口增长对中国的改革和经济发展是很必要的。我们应当强调控 制生育的重要性，并且号召全国采取更有效的行动。 Is Failure a Bad Thing? 1. 失败是常有的事。 2. 人们对失败有各种态度、。 3. 我对失败的态度。 Failure is not a stranger to life. It can happen anywhere, anytime and to anyone. No person succeeds all the time. The more development you want to make, the more failure you might encounter. So, people are faced with failure now and then. There are different attitudes towards failure. Some people are afraid of failure and they can not bear the blow of failure, so they stay where they are and try to not to mike progress. Some optimists, however, fight against failure bravely and achieve all his aims at last. My attitude is that we aren’t afraid of failure. When we meet with failure, we don’t lose heart. We should call up all our courage and persist in what you are engaged in. Remember the proverb: Where there is a will, there is a way. 失败是坏事吗？ 失败是常有的事。失败可以随时随地发生在任何人身上。常胜将军是没有的。你越想要取得成就，你就越有可能遇到更多的失败。所以人们时时都会遇到失败。 对待失败人们有各种有同的态度。有些人惧怕失败，他们承受不起失败的打击，因此，他们踟蹰不前，不思进取。然而些乐观的人勇敢地同失败作斗争，最终实现了所有的目标。 我的态度是不怕失败。当我们遇到困难时，不可丧失信心。我们应当鼓足勇气，坚持我们从事的事业。要记住：有志者事竟成。 Why are Children Lacking Sleep ? Just how important is school nowadays? Teachers often complain that homework is not done well and that students are often arriving at school delayed and yawning through lack of sleep. There are, it seems, two main explanations for this. Firstly, many young children stay up late to watch TV programmes suitable for them, which may finish as late as 8:00. No child wants to admit not having seen what everybody else has. Secondly, a growing number of older children, particularly those approaching school-leaving age are taking up parttime evening or weekend work. They feel that working experience, not academic qualification will help them find jobs on leaving school.
